Pierre Bonnard at Acquavella Gallery

Have you ever met a contemporary artist who isn’t madly in love with with Bonnard? Me Either.

After my second full day of binging on all of the art I could at the Met, I had one more exciting stop planned: Acquavella Gallery.

“Bonnard: The Experience of Seeing” featured twenty still lives, nudes, interior scenes and landscapes from the painter’s later years, when the artist was at the height of his powers. The interior of the gallery reminded me of some of my favorite smaller museums in Paris and since many of the paintings in this show were from private collections, it felt pretty sacred to be so close to them. I made a least four and a half slow rounds, taking all my time in front of each painting and left feeling almost as radiant as Bonnard’s palette as I stepped back into the sunshine for a long walk through Central Park.

Listen to an episode of The Picture about the exhibition.
